Some people who come to Dr. Lee Hee-young's surgery in Sinsa-dong in Seoul's affluent Gangnam district,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], lured only by the sign outside, may want to walk straight back out again. The sign advertises plastic surgery,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but it looks more like a factory inside filled with engineering devices and tools.
What are they used for? In fact, Lee (43) does not use them for his medical practice. He is an inventor.
Lee has acquired around 150 patents for his inventions. Even now,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], he receives around a patent a month for developing a new machine or for coming up with a new type of engineering method. Lee's treatise on one of his inventions was recently featured in the Journal of Controlled Release,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the most prominent academic journal in the field of pharmaceutical engineering research. After Lee wrote a number of engineering theses,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], he has been getting invitations to speak at engineering forums rather than medical ones. He is also an advisor for the Korean Intellectual Property Office.
He became more interested in machines than the human body when he developed a passion for cars in the late 1990s. At the time, he was working at a community heath center to substitute his military service after graduating from Catholic University of Korea and completing his residency. His passion was not for driving the cars but taking them apart. He buys used cars and spends all night "dissecting" them.
"If you understand how cars work,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], you end up mastering most fields of engineering," Lee says. He says it is difficult to describe the elation he feels when he succeeds in getting a car to operate after he analyzes and improves the function of a particular component. Using his skills in automotive repair,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Lee has tinkered with a wide range of other machines and added new functions to them.
As he became more adept as an inventor, he set up his own medical devices company in 2001. A device produced by his company that extracts stem cells and transplants them is used in plastic surgery clinics across Korea for procedures on the face,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], cheek and breasts. His company even exports the device to the U.S. and Europe.
Asked about the trend of students shunning engineering schools,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Lee says,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], "If they'd been able to take machines apart and put them back together when they were young,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], they would have been unable to shake off the allure of machines." He says his own dream is to set up an engineering class for children.
